Tamil Nadu Orders Renewable Power Plants to Share Real-Time Data or Face Generation Penalty

30 June 2026 2 min read By the Live Chennai desk

Renewable power generation plants in Tamil Nadu are now required to share real-time operational data with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board immediately and without delay. Plants that fail to comply will have 10% of their electricity generation deducted from billing calculations, Energy and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar has announced.

Why Real-Time Data Is Essential

Wind and solar power generation in Tamil Nadu has grown rapidly, now accounting for more than 50% of the state's total electricity demand. Because renewable output fluctuates with weather conditions, real-time data is critical to operating the state's power grid safely, consistently, and economically.

The Mandate

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission issued the Tamil Nadu Electricity Grid Code – 2026, which makes it mandatory for all wind and solar power plants to establish real-time data communication with the State Load Dispatch Centre through a modern computer-based SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. The State Dispatch Centre issued a formal circular to all wind and solar producers on 30 May 2026.

Benefits of this real-time connectivity include:

  • Ensuring the safety and stability of the state grid
  • Enabling accurate planning of power generation and demand
  • Providing consumers with uninterrupted, quality power supply
  • Enabling more effective integration of renewable energy

Current Compliance Gap

Tamil Nadu currently has more than 12,000 wind and solar power producers. Of these, fewer than 10% are sharing real-time data with the State Dispatch Centre. Around 90% of green power producers have failed to share this data despite multiple-stage notices, reminder letters, and high-level meetings.

Notice and Deadlines

A notice letter with a 15-day deadline dated 30 May 2026 was issued to all renewable energy producers. Doubts and queries raised by producers and associations were subsequently addressed with detailed clarifications.

The deadline cannot be extended further due to repeated directives from the Southern Regional Power Committee of the central government and statutory requirements under the Grid Code.

Consequences for non-compliance:

  • Within 15 days: SCADA integration must be completed in full
  • After 15 days (non-compliant): 10% of generation excluded from dispatch and deviation settlement accounting
  • After 30 days: Full generation excluded from settlement processes
  • After 45 days: The State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) will take further action under Central Electricity Commission regulations and notify the electricity regulatory commission

Next Steps

Energy accounting and settlement for June 2026 will be carried out through the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation. All wind and solar power producers are urged to immediately establish real-time data connectivity and extend full cooperation to ensure grid safety and reliable power supply.
