The stretch of sea between the Thiruchendur Subramania Swami Temple and the Ayya Vaikunda Avatara Pathikam (Swamithoppe) regularly experiences tidal recession around the new moon and full moon days, as well as the days immediately before and after. This is considered a normal monthly occurrence in the area.
Around this full moon (Pournami), the sea at Thiruchendur once again pulled back suddenly and dramatically — receding approximately 100 feet and exposing algae-covered rocks that are normally submerged.
Despite the potential hazard, devotees visiting the area showed little concern for their safety. Many climbed onto the exposed, moss-slick rocks and posed for selfies, unaware of the risks.
Police personnel and temple beach safety staff quickly deployed to the affected stretch, issuing warnings to those who had ventured onto the rocks and urging them to move back to safer ground.
