Government School Teacher Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Sexually Harassing 9-Year-Old Student in Classroom

Chidambaram alias Nadesan (age 63), a resident of Veeravanallur in Nellai (Tirunelveli) district, worked as a handloom and weaving teacher at a government school in the area.

In 2022, he sexually harassed a 9-year-old female student inside the classroom. The student reported the incident to her parents, who were deeply shocked and filed a complaint at the Cheranmahadevi All Women Police Station.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the POCSO Act and arrested Chidambaram.

The case was tried before the Special POCSO Court in Nellai district. Yesterday, Judge Sureshkumar delivered the verdict, sentencing the accused Chidambaram to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000.

Additionally, the court ordered that the victim girl be provided ₹5 lakh in compensation from the government.
