A seafood processing and export factory named 'Punitha Peter Paul' had been operating in Kannigaiperi village, Tiruvallur district. On the 21st of this month, an ammonia gas leak occurred at the facility, severely affecting migrant workers from northern states. Sixteen female workers who were impacted succumbed to their injuries despite medical treatment.
Following the incident, 146 migrant workers employed at the factory were housed at a private marriage hall in Periyapalayam. In the first phase, 59 workers from Odisha who had been staying there were sent back to their home state on the 26th, at their own request.
Yesterday, a total of 68 workers from Assam — 44 men and 24 women — were dispatched to their home state, also at their own wish. Tiruvallur Revenue RDO Ravichandran and field-level officials escorted the workers to Chennai Central Railway Station, where they were seen off on a train bound for Assam.
The district administration is now making arrangements to send the remaining workers from Jharkhand, who are still sheltering at the Periyapalayam marriage hall, back to their respective home states.
