Jabalpur: At least 10 people have died, including five members of a single family from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, after a tourist boat capsized at the Bargi Dam reservoir on the Narmada River near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on April 30.
A group of tourists from Tamil Nadu had travelled to Madhya Pradesh for a leisure trip during the summer vacation season. They boarded a boat operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department for a ride on the Bargi reservoir. Strong winds and a sudden storm caused the boat to capsize, plunging passengers — including women and children — into the water.
Of the approximately 41 people on board, 28 have been rescued. Rescue teams continue searching for the missing.
A video recorded just minutes before the accident has emerged online, showing that none of the tourists on board were wearing life jackets. Key safety failures identified in the incident include:
The pre-capsizing video, showing passengers with no safety gear amid rough conditions, has drawn widespread outrage.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to accelerate rescue operations. Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, and senior police officers visited the site to oversee the rescue effort.
The state government announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for those injured. An investigation into the lapses, including alleged negligence, is underway.
This accident follows a nearly identical incident in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, in the second week of April, where 15 tourists died in a boat accident on the Yamuna River. In that case too, none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. Observers have called on authorities to urgently tighten safety enforcement for water tourism activities across India to prevent further tragedies.
Sasikala, General Secretary of the All India Dravidam Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressing shock and grief at the loss of 10 lives, including five from a single Tiruchirappalli family. She urged the Madhya Pradesh government to urgently rescue all remaining survivors and extended her heartfelt condolences to the victims' families.
TTV Dhinakaran, General Secretary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), also posted condolences on X, expressing deep sorrow over the deaths of five Tamil Nadu residents in the accident. He prayed for the souls of the departed.
