Panic broke out this morning at the coastal area of the Thiruchendur Subramania Swami temple — the second of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan — when the sea water suddenly and dramatically receded.
Thousands of devotees visit this temple daily, and it is customary for pilgrims to take a holy dip in the sea before seeking the deity's blessings.
Authorities noted that it is generally a natural occurrence for the sea to recede in the morning on new moon (Amavasai) and full moon (Pournami) days, returning to normal levels by the evening. However, today's recession — which extended approximately 70 feet — drew unusual alarm.
As a result of the receding waters, moss-covered rocks and sandbanks that are normally submerged were left fully exposed, adding to the sense of unease among onlookers.
The temple administration and police jointly advised the public not to panic at the sight of the receded sea. They also cautioned that the exposed rocks posed a risk of injury, and urged devotees to bathe only in designated safe areas along the shore.
Police personnel have been deployed across the coastal areas for security duty and are continuously monitoring the situation.
